Concreting work: quotes, licensing and what good looks like
Concreting sits under building trade licensing in most states once the job value crosses a threshold - in Queensland, concreting is a QBCC-licensed trade class, and in NSW larger residential concreting requires a licence. For a typical driveway or slab, ask what licence (if any) your state requires at that job value and whether the concreter holds it, along with current public liability insurance.
A good concrete quote specifies more than square metres: slab thickness (100mm is typical for driveways), concrete strength (MPa rating), reinforcement (mesh type and placement), sub-base preparation, expansion joints and the finish (broom, trowel, exposed aggregate, coloured). These details are exactly where cheap quotes cut corners, and they determine whether the slab cracks in two years or lasts decades.
Weather and curing matter: concrete poured in extreme heat or onto poorly compacted fill fails early, and a professional will talk about curing time before you drive on it (usually about a week for vehicles). Minor hairline cracking is normal; structural cracks from skipped reinforcement or bad site prep are not, and they're near-impossible to fix cheaply after the fact.
What to check before you hire
